Whole Foods Market has initiated a voluntary recall of Whole Catch Yellow Fin Tuna Steaks (frozen) because they may contain elevated levels of histamine which can cause an allergic reaction called scombroid poisoning.

Symptoms generally appear within minutes to an hour after eating the affected fish and include tingling or burning sensation in the mouth, facial swelling, rash, hives and itchy skin, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Two illnesses have been reported to date.

The recalled items have a best-by date of Dec. 5, 2010 and Lot Code: 4853309157A. They were sold in several states including Alabama, Florida, Indiana and several others. For a complete list, refer to the the FDA News Release.

Scombroid poisoning is a foodborne illness that results from eating spoiled (decayed) fish. It is also the second most common type of seafood poisoning.

Consumers should return the recalled product to the nearest Whole Foods Market. Questions should be directed to the company at: 512-542-0656.
